Dr. Michael Rees helps senior executives and entrepreneurs with decision analysis and support. His special expertise is in situations where issues in strategy, value-creation, risk assessment and business economics are best addressed in an integrated way using practical advanced quantitative approaches. In addition to his core consulting work, he is one of the world’s leading authors and trainers in the field of financial modelling and risk modelling.
Michael combines practical experience from top firms with an exceptional analytic record. In addition to his 30 years’ experience in business and finance, he has a Doctorate in Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Algorithms, and a B.A. with First Class Honours in Mathematics, both from Oxford University in the UK. He has an MBA with Distinction from INSEAD in France. He also studied for the Certificate of Quantitative Finance, graduating top of the class for course work, and receiving the Wilmott Award for the highest final exam mark.
Michael has practical experience in many sectors, including oil, gas, energy and resources, health care, and biotechnology, chemicals, construction, and engineering, insurance. He started his career in strategy consulting: At Braxton Associates (now part of Deloitte), he worked in the UK and as a founding member of the German office; at Mercer Management Consulting (now Oliver Wyman), he worked for 4 years as a Partner (Principal). In these roles, he advised clients on issues of strategy, organization and change (including market and competitive analysis, partner and acquisition assessments, performance measurement and improvement, cost reduction, outsourcing, process redesign, restructuring and change management). He later worked at J.P. Morgan (conducting equity valuations, publishing reports and advising fund managers and hedge funds), and was ranked as a top City analyst by all the companies under his direct coverage, and received a vote in the Institutional Investor 2002 survey. He has worked independently since mid-2002, during which time he has conducted a myriad of consulting and training engagements. For example, he worked closely with Palisade Corporation for six years, acting as Director of Consulting and Training, thus becoming the world’s most experienced consultant and instructor in the use of the @RISK Excel add-in to solve practical problems in business decision support. Similarly, during 2017, he acted as Senior Advisor to Duff & Phelps, a major corporate finance and valuation-advisory firm.
Michael is the author of Principles of Financial Modelling: Model Design and Best Practices using Excel and VBA (John Wiley & Sons, 2018), of Business Risk and Simulation Modelling in Practice: Using Excel, VBA and @RISK (John Wiley & Sons, 2015), and of Financial Modelling in Practice: A Concise Guide for Intermediate and Advanced Level (John Wiley & Sons, 2008). He is also a contributing author in The Strategic CFO: Creating Value in a Dynamic Market Environment (Springer, 2012), and has written articles in the Wilmott Magazine (2004, 2005). He is an Associate Fellow of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications, and is regularly invited to speak at conferences (e.g. SMI conferences in 2009 and 2010, The Danish Risk Management Conference 2011, Vietnam Petroleum Institute 40th Anniversary Conference, 2018).
Current research areas include ways to link Big Data with uncertainty assessments and risk modelling, as well as approaches to integrate cash flow risk modelling within valuation analysis and earnings forecasts in effective ways.
He has had the opportunity to live in several countries, and speaks fluent French and German, in addition to his native English.
